Chi Lin (Kei Loon, Chinese Unicorn)

The Chi Lin, known as the Chinese Unicorn or the Dragon Horse, is a very popular Chinese mythical creature.  The Chi Lin's body is generally depicted with a combination of a body of a deer, scales of a fish, cloven toes similar to those of a horse, and a furry horn (different variations of the Chi Lin can have one, two, or even three horns.)  According to the legend, the Chi Lin used to guard the gates of heaven; thus it generally symbolizes protection and guardianship of home and family.  Furthermore, the Chi Lin is portrayed as an auspicious symbol of good luck, wisdom, good will, prosperous descendants, longevity, wealth, and career advance.  The Chi Lin is also known as Kei Loon or Qi Lin.      

Three-Legged Money Frog

The legendary three-legged money frog (also called three-legged money toad), or simply called money frog (or money toad) is an auspicious symbol of attracting wealth and success.  It is usually seen surrounded and sitting on a bed of a pile of gold ingots with a lucky or wealth coin in its mouth.  This mythical money frog is a Chinese cultural heritage that has become inseparable to Chinese way of life and in many other parts of Asia when symbolically wishing to attract prosperity.  It is popularly found in homes, restaurants, offices and wherever in the places of conducting money transaction in China; as well as around the world wherever those individuals who practice Feng Shui.  It is believed to bring good luck and wealth when placed a money frog near where the flow of money is anticipated, like near cash registrars or on an office desk where business is conducted with customers.  At home, a good location to place a money frog is in a corner of the room where a gathering point of chi is strong or in one of the corners inside the house near the front of the main door.  Sometimes the money frog sits on a Ba Gua.  It symbolizes fortune along with safekeeping from bad luck.    Back to the Top

Lucky Buddha

Kuan Yin

Kuan Yin, the goddess of mercy, is originally known as Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in the Lotus Sutra, a Buddhist text written in the ancient Indian language Sanscript.  She is one of the four great Bodhisattva, but notably known in the feminine form, of Buddhism.  As a Bodhisattva, the true enlightened one, who most embodies compassion, and, the name Avalokitesvara implies as the one who reaches out for cries of the world, Kuan Yin delayed her entry into Nirvana for the salvation of the suffering ones.  According to the legend, she is believed to be able to transform into many different forms always seeking out for those who are in need of help.  Her image in statues and paintings can be found in temples, shrines, homes, shops and restaurants throughout China and in many other parts of Asia.  Some of the popular images of Kuan Yin are seen as a thousand arms and eyes, a goddess figure dressed in white holding a willow branch, riding on a dragon or a carp in swirling water or surrounded by children.  Kuan Yin symbolizes mercy, compassion, purity, protection and wisdom.  Kuan Yin is also pronounced as Quan Yin, Kwan Yin or Guan Yin.      back to the top

Chinese Dragon

          The Chinese Dragon, lung or long in Chinese, is the most beloved and celebrated mythical creature in China.  Its legend and popularity extend far beyond China to many other parts of the world.  The dragon is considered as one of the foremost auspicious symbols of power, good luck and good fortune.  Magnificent images of dragons are generally depicted in a mystical serpentine shape.  The dragon's body is known to be the representation of nine earthly species from land, water and air: head of a camel, horns of a deer, eyes of a hare, ears of a cow, neck of a snake, scales of a carp, belly of a frog, legs and claws of an eagle, and paws of a tiger.  The image of the dragon is often seen holding a pearl in its claw.  The pearl is said to symbolize wisdom and great achievement.

          The dragon represents yang, a symbol of male vigor and fertility.  Many images of the dragon are seen paired with the phoenix; the dragon as a symbol of male and the phoenix as female, together, is an auspicious sign of good marriage.

          The dragon's place is in the East, the direction of sunrise, where it is symbolically associated with beginning of life or beginning of a life cycle as in seasons; here in this context the dragon is correlated with water as a life-giving force in Mother Nature.  It is believed that the dragon has the power to control the wind, clouds and rain.  In ancient times, when the agriculture was the most important way of sustaining life, the dragon was regarded as the god of rain.

         The Chinese Dragon is a symbol of many good things in life: goodness of Mother Nature as life-giving, abundance and prosperity, attainment of a great success, protection from unfavorable spirits and events in life, wisdom and courage, loyalty, strong self-esteem, happy marriage and lasting love.    back to the top
